ASHRAE Standards Committee Rejects Referendum "aa"

By a vote of 18-0, the ASHRAE Standards Committee rejected the proposed 62.1 addendum “aa” at the summer meetings in Kansas City sending it back to the committee to be reworked over the next three years. If adopted, addendum “aa” would have significantly changed the requirements of ASHRAE’s IAQ Procedure (IAQP) and made its application considerably more time-consuming and cumbersome, if not impossible.

Among other things, Addendum “aa” would have lowered the CO2 threshold to an unreasonable and irresponsible level, creating adverse commercial designs while incurring sizable capital cost increases. The post-occupancy testing requirement, as written in the addendum, was not practical and due to higher cost, potentially lead to non-conformance of the standard as well as offsetting any savings due to reduced equipment sizes and ongoing energy use achieved through the IAQP.

We appreciate all your efforts in informing your design engineers and end users. The action today lays the groundwork for a better understanding of different technologies that have a proven track record of being very effective at cleaning the air we breathe. With our help, new test methods will be developed by ASHRAE to ensure a standard that includes more options in the market place, not less.  If anyone would like to join this committee to support our efforts and insure we have a “seat at the table”, please reach out.
